Cynthia Ní Mhurchú MEP has hosted the first Irish Presidency associated event on tourism in the European Parliament this week. The event built upon a roundtable she hosted on 23 April and reinforced the message that tourism is a strategic asset for the EU. Tim Fairhurst moderated the event, which focused on delivering wider goals around competitiveness, regional development, sustainability, innovation and social cohesion.
Following the April roundtable, Ní Mhurchú led the development of Renew Europe’s Position Paper on Tourism, which made its European debut in Brussels this week after first launching in Cork on 9 June. The paper set out a positive agenda with key recommendations including stronger recognition of tourism within EU competitiveness frameworks, better governance structures, improved alignment between tourism bodies and member state representatives, and improved access to funding in the EU’s next long-term budget for 2028-2034.
Séamus Boland, President of the European Economic and Social Committee, and Irish government Minister Norma Foley attended the event in support. The event reinforced the message that tourism is an economic sector that can help the EU deliver on its wider goals.
