Public information events on the long-awaited N4 upgrade in the Midlands will take place next week. The N4 Mullingar to Roosky upgrade is currently at the third stage which is design and environmental evaluation. Next week the project team is hosting a series of in-person information events in Mullingar, Edgeworthstown and Longford where they will present the latest design development. Since late last year the project team has been engaging with landowners to facilitate the extensive engineering and environmental surveys required as part of the design process.

The 52 kilometre stretch of the N4 is a single carriageway road that passes through or close to villages and towns including Ballinalack, Rathowen, Edgeworthstown, Longford and Newtownforbes. It is the largest unimproved section of the road and accounts for approximately 25pc of the entire N4/M4 corridor. The N4 project team reported that upwards of 17,500 vehicles use the road daily.

The project team has also identified high collision statistics on this section of the N4 with more than 200 personal injury collisions between 2008 and 2023. Of these 20 resulted in fatalities and 35 in serious injuries with more than 50pc of these collisions occurring in the last six years.
