Emirates introduces cryptocurrency as payment option for passengers (but ONLY for UAE residents)

Emirates has officially launched cryptocurrency payments for flight bookings through a partnership with Crypto.com Pay. The feature allows eligible passengers to purchase tickets directly from their digital wallets via the airline’s official website and mobile app.

While this marks a major step forward for digital assets in global aviation, the initial rollout includes specific limitations such as location restrictions.

  • The feature is currently available only to eligible UAE residents.
  • Bookings must be priced and settled in UAE Dirhams (AED).
  • Users must have an active, verified account with Crypto.com.

The checkout system operates differently depending on the device you use to book your flight:On Desktop (emirates.com): Select “Crypto.com Pay” at the checkout screen. Scan the generated QR code using your mobile crypto wallet, approve the transaction, and your e-ticket is instantly issued.

On Mobile (Emirates App) selecting the option redirects you automatically to the Crypto.com mobile app. Once you authorize the funds, you are sent back to the Emirates app to receive your booking confirmation.

Emirates is the first major Gulf network carrier to directly accept digital asset payments. This rollout delivers on a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between both companies back in July 2025. The integration is powered by Crypto.com’s Dubai entity, which holds a Stored Value Facilities (SVF) licence from the Central Bank of the UAE. Under this framework, Emirates does not hold volatile cryptocurrencies directly; instead, payments are securely converted into AED at the point of transaction.

This initiative directly supports the Dubai Cashless Strategy under the D33 Economic Agenda, which aims to digitize 90pc of all public and private financial transactions in the emirate by the end of 2026.
