European airlines announce further route cuts for winter

More airlines have finalised winter route cuts for the season which begins at the end of this month. A wave of route and capacity cuts have been announced for the winter 2026–27 season, driven primarily by high jet fuel costs, rising airport taxes, and ongoing restructuring. Budget carriers and regional hubs are bearing the brunt of these schedule tightening measures, leaving travelers with fewer off-peak options.

Ryanair has heavily trimmed its winter footprint, reducing its projected passenger targets by 2 million to mitigate seasonal losses. The airline is intentionally shifting aircraft away from regions with high aviation taxes and airport fees:

  • Austria (Vienna): Four aircraft are being removed from its Vienna base, leading to the cancellation of 12 winter routes.
  • Germany: This stands as Ryanair’s most heavily impacted market. The airline is executing significant route reductions serving Berlin, Hamburg, and Cologne due to surging airport access fees.
  • Belgium: Expanding on prior reductions, Ryanair has pulled multiple aircraft from Brussels Charleroi and cut 20 routes across Belgium in response to local ticket tax hikes.
  • Spain: The airline is completely exiting Asturias and Vigo-Peinador, withdrawing from Tenerife North, and closing its operational base in Santiago de Compostela.
  • The Azores: Ryanair has entirely removed 6 routes connecting to the Azores Islands.

EasyJet has announced capacity Reduction: easyJet is dropping between 600,000 and 700,000 seats from its winter schedule. These reductions are primarily targeted at thin, regional, and off-peak short-haul routes.

AirBaltic & Finnair have confirmed targeted capacity reductions and route prunings for winter 2026/27 to offset operational cost pressures. Wideroe is ending its Dublin-Bergen service on October 27.

Aer Lingus routes paused throughout the winter season and will not return until late April 2027:

  • Dublin to Seattle (Suspended Oct 25 – Apr 26)
  • Dublin to Frankfurt (Suspended Nov 3 – Mar 27)
  • Dublin to Hamburg (Suspended Nov 3 – Mar 27)
  • Dublin to Malta (Suspended Nov 5 – Mar
