Organised by G Adventures, the fourth annual World Community Tourism Summit brought together nearly 700 international delegates, travel agents, media, and changemakers to highlight sustainable and community-based tourism.
The summit kicked off in Phnom Penh on September 26 under the theme “Community Exhibition: Temple Fair,” featuring traditional Khmer performances and local food displays.
Delegates visited the Silk Island Community Centre to see traditional silk weaving, explored the Sambor Prei Kuk community-based tourism site, and rode with “Tuk Tuk Lady” in Siem Reap to support female drivers.
Held on September 27 (coinciding with UN World Tourism Day), the main conference featured keynotes and discussions on responsible travel, led by G Adventures founder Bruce Poon Tip and Cambodian Tourism Minister Huot Hak. The week culminated in an evening gala dinner under the floodlit towers of the Bayon in Siem Reap, headlined by a performance from DJ Earworm.
Bruce Poon Tip shared that the company works more with the travel trade in England and Ireland than in any other region globally. Poon Tip shared that Trailfinders is one of the operator’s largest global clients alongside Hays Travel and Travel Counsellors.
The GX Summit took place in Cambodia alongside G Adventures’ non-profit partner Planeterra. The summit hosted 16 frontline agents from England who toured local social enterprise initiatives. The event concluded at the World Community Tourism Summit.
