The Monaghan Plein Air Festival returns on Saturday 8 August 2026 to the beautiful setting of Lough Muckno Leisure Park in Castleblayney. This annual outdoor painting event attracts artists from across Ireland and welcomes everyone from seasoned professionals to complete beginners eager to try painting en plein air for the first time.
The day runs from morning until late afternoon, giving participants ample time to set up easels amid the park’s sweeping lake views, peaceful woodland walks and nearby street scenes. The mission is to showcase County Monaghan’s breathtaking natural beauty while fostering a love of outdoor painting. Artists bring their preferred mediums and find inspiration in every direction—water reflections, trees, light and the surrounding landscape.
A key highlight is the optional workshop with acclaimed Irish artist Kieran Guckian, offering practical insights and techniques for those looking to develop their plein air practice. Funded with support from Creative Ireland via Monaghan County Council’s Creative Monaghan programme, the festival emphasises accessibility and community.
