Japan Airlines has partnered with JetZero on the Z4, a next-generation aircraft whose flattened, tailless silhouette uses a blended wing body design where the fuselage and wings merge into a single lifting surface. JetZero estimates a 30-50pc improvement in fuel efficiency over aircraft flying today, though the company has yet to fly a full-scale prototype. Construction of the first demonstrator began this year, with a first flight targeted for 2027.
The Z4 is designed to carry 250 passengers over a range of 9,260km, covering many long-haul routes JAL already flies between Asia, North America and Europe. The cabin is expected to offer a broader floor split into multiple seating zones, wider aisles, dedicated overhead bin space for every passenger and larger boarding doors. Engines mounted on top of the aircraft are expected to cut cabin noise.
JAL framed the collaboration as central to its Vision 2035 growth strategy, with lower operating costs per seat sitting alongside an elevated onboard experience. United Airlines, Delta Air Lines and Alaska Airlines have also partnered with the start-up. A January 2026 study from Hamburg University of Applied Sciences challenged the 30-50pc fuel savings claims.
