Kerry County Council is in discussions with Kerry Airport about the possible introduction of a direct Kerry to Belfast route. The talks follow a query from a local councillor who noted the strong interest generated by events such as Fleadh Cheol na hÉireann in Belfast. The council confirmed it continues to engage with the airport on all potential routes.

The idea was raised at a full council meeting by Sinn Féin Councillor Robert Brosnan, who noted high travel demand including strong turnout from Kerry for the Fleadh Cheol na hÉireann in Belfast. Kerry Airport noted that while it is working on a five-year strategic plan and seeking to expand its network following recent passenger growth, the final decision to launch and operate any new route rests with commercial airline operators.

Proponents highlight that a direct flight would significantly cut down current land travel times, which typically take 5.5 to 6.5 hours, and boost tourism, business and cultural links between the South-West and the six counties.
