Mount Congreve Gardens in Waterford has invited visitors to embrace the growing trend for leaf peeping and experience one of nature’s most spectacular annual transformations, with 70 acres of gardens and woodland providing a setting for the changing colours of the season. The estate has been welcoming visitors to witness the transformation of its internationally renowned collection of trees, including magnificent maples.
As the days have shortened, trees have begun to reduce their production of chlorophyll, revealing yellow and orange pigments known as carotenoids. Red and purple colours have been produced by anthocyanins, which have formed in leaves as sugars have become trapped during the final stages of the growing season. Bright, sunny days have allowed leaves to continue producing sugars, while cool nights have helped create conditions for richer red and crimson pigmentation.
Mount Congreve has created a Leaf Peeping Accommodation Package, a two-night stay designed around experiencing the season. The package has included adult bikes for exploring the 46km Waterford Greenway and seasonal treats at The Stables Café. Prices have started from €435 per couple for two nights, and the package has been available from 1 September to 30 November 2026.

At Mount Congreve, we are seeing more visitors coming along to enjoy and savour the experience of ‘leaf peeping’ each year. There is something particularly special about waking up in the middle of an estate at this time of year, stepping outside into the cool morning air and knowing that the landscape around you is changing by the day. The science of autumn is fascinating, but the experience is wonderfully simple: get outside, look up and watch nature put on its annual show.”
