Multitrip.com has published research showing 38pc of Irish holidaymakers have chosen “coolcations,” selecting destinations where they are unlikely to face extreme heat. The Opinium survey of 1,000 people also found 58pc of respondents see holidays as a top priority and one of the last things they would cut back on. 63pc of people are cutting back on other spending to ensure they can go on holiday.
The survey revealed 70pc of respondents are aiming to travel at off-peak times this year to keep costs down. 29pc would consider a “wonky weekend” style break, such as travelling from a Saturday to a Tuesday, to save costs. While 45pc consider booking early to get a good price, only 26pc of customers make sure they have travel insurance in place as soon as they book a holiday.
Jason Whelan, MD of Multitrip.com, stated the research suggests holidaymakers are looking for trips that offer better value and greater comfort, with cooler destinations and off-peak travel becoming more appealing. He urged all holidaymakers to purchase a policy as soon as they book their trip to ensure their holidays are protected for cancellation cover. He noted that the cost of travel insurance does not get cheaper if left to the last minute.
