The Museum of Liverpool will open an exhibition titled “70 Years of The Cavern Club” on Saturday 16 January 2027, running to Sunday 31 October 2027. The exhibition charts the venue’s journey from its opening as a jazz cellar in 1957 to its status as a global cultural phenomenon. The exhibition is a collaboration with The Cavern Club and includes personal stories and first-hand accounts from the communities who shaped the venue’s history.
The exhibition traces the Cavern’s closures, redevelopment and revival, presenting it as a shared cultural experience. The line-up of artists who performed at the venue includes The Beatles, Chuck Berry, Stevie Wonder, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Queen, Elton John, Oasis, Adele, Arctic Monkeys and Jamie Webster. Julia Baird, John Lennon’s sister and Cavern co-owner, contributed to the exhibition.
Ahead of the exhibition, the Museum of Liverpool and The Cavern Club will host Summer of Sound, a month of live music from 24 July to 29 August 2026. Performers include The Quarrymen, Dave Monks, Michael Head and Ian Prowse. The programme closes with performances by Nube 9 from Argentina, The Flaming Shakers from Spain and Gleison Túlio from Brazil as part of the International Beatleweek Festival.
Julia Baird, John Lennon’s sister and Cavern co-owner, shared, “My brother John always said his happiest times as a band were playing in the Cavern. He wasn’t alone in his love of this wonderful club and what a great opportunity to get those stories and memories together in one place.”
Karen O’Rourke, Curator of Sport, Music and Performance at Museum of Liverpool, shared, “The Cavern Club is so much more than the dank basement where The Beatles were discovered, it’s a cellar full of noise that has shaped Liverpool’s identity for seventy years.”
