One in five now books trips just TWO weeks before departure – TUI’s Holiday Hypermarket

New research reveals from TUI’s Holiday Hypermarket confirms the trend that one in five holidaymakers now books trips just two weeks before departure.

Th group says this reflects a trend towards greater flexibility and last-minute deals amid economic pressures and shifting consumer habits.

The behaviour is impactoing tour operators, airlines, and hotel availability, particularly for summer and short-haul destinations.

The survey suggests one in five TUI package holidays are now booked within 14 days of departure, reflecting a major acceleration in spontaneous travel planning, with a large portion of the population completely bypassing traditional long-term holiday planning window timelines. Key Data Points are:

  • The 14-Day Rush: 20pc of travellers book within two weeks of flying.
  • The Four-Week Window: Over 40pc of holidays are booked within a month of departure.
  • Annual Surge: This late-booking surge marks a 30pc year-on-year increase.
  • Shrinking Windows: The average booking timeline dropped from 88 days last year to just 71 days this year.

Short-haul sunshine destinations dominate the late-booking market, led by:

  • The Pros and Cons of Late Booking
  • Waiting until the last minute offers clear trade-offs between cost and choice:
  • The Benefit: Excellent financial bargains can be found for travellers who remain highly flexible about where they go and when they fly.
  • The Risk: Severe limitations on flight times, family rooms, accessible accommodation, and specific highly-rated hotels.

The trend is heavily impacting how large tour operators function. Companies like TUI Group have introduced physical and digital pop-up support initiatives, such as the “Last Minute, Holiday Check It” service, to combat the decision anxiety, rushed choices, and price fears that face 2026 late-bookers.
