New €1.2m visitor facilities have opened on the shores of Lough Derg in Tipperary, enhancing outdoor tourism infrastructure in the region. The newly opened facility is located at Dromineer Harbour, developed by Tipperary County Council in partnership with Fáilte Ireland, delivering a “best-in-class” outdoor tourism amenity aimed at strengthening the region’s position within Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands.
The development saw the construction of a new single-storey changing places building incorporating accessible sanitary facilities, a storage area and all associated site development works. The changing places facility caters to people with disabilities, and features a larger bathroom area, with a hoist, an adult-sized changing bench, and shower facilities. The project aims to provide a “best in class” outdoor tourism amenity and serve as a central hub for tourists in Dromineer. The facilities operate on a tap-to-pay system, costing €0.50 to use the toilets, while a shower will cost €3.00.
The investment came from Fáilte Ireland’s Platforms for Growth Scheme, which specifically targets ‘platforms’ or projects that have the greatest potential to grow tourism across Ireland and strategically enhance the Irish tourism offering to meet visitor needs. The development aims to enhance the visitor experience at Lough Derg. Dromineer is the sixth Water Sports Activity Facility to begin construction under this scheme with a total of 19 facilities to be developed across 13 counties. The new facility will help extend the outdoor tourism season by providing year-round hot showers, changing rooms, toilets, secure storage, and induction space. Accessibility and sustainability remain key focus points for the project, ensuring full wheelchair access and the installation of solar heating panels.
