Tourism Ireland has confirmed it will consider Sligo and the north section of the Wild Atlantic Way for its international marketing campaigns. The decision positions the region to capitalise on the growing global travel trend known as coolcations, where holidaymakers seek out cooler northern climates to escape extreme summer heatwaves. The initiative stems from a motion brought forward by Independent Councillor Marie Casserly at a Sligo County Council meeting. She advocated for a targeted campaign promoting the North West as a climate-resilient sanctuary for overheated European travellers.

Sligo is positioned for this trend, offering temperate summer weather typically averaging comfortable 18°C to 20°C Atlantic breezes along with long daylight hours. The marketing focus aims to draw international visitors toward the area’s natural and cultural experiences. Adventure tourism includes premier surfing at Strandhill Beach, mountain biking trails and coastal kayaking. Scenic landscapes include the Benbulben loop and the Gleniff Horseshoe. Slow travel and wellness activities align with cooling down and resetting, such as traditional Voya seaweed baths in Enniscrone, forest bathing and exploring megalithic heritage sites. The strategy aims to boost overseas visitor numbers and increase tourist spend.
