Saxony’s government has planned to develop the Erzgebirge Vogtland and Chemnitz-Zwickau area into a stronger cross-border tourism region. Projects have included better promotion around the Göltzschtalbrücke health tourism and cycling routes.
Southwest Saxony implemented a comprehensive master plan to transform the region into a major cross-border travel and adventure hub. The plan targets the Ore Mountains, the Vogtland and the Chemnitz-Zwickau area as a unified adventure destination in the heart of Europe. Moving past traditional winter sports and hiking, the region is directing a shift toward diverse, year-round tourism, including cycling, health and wellness and skiing, to counter climate change effects.
Minister of Culture and Tourism Barbara Klepsch emphasised that tourism infrastructure directly enhances the quality of life for local residents while supporting an economic force that sustains roughly 190,000 jobs across Saxony. The strategy expects to build on strong guest satisfaction metrics, with the Ore Mountains scoring 86.4 points and the Vogtland scoring 85.8 out of 100 on the region’s satisfaction index. Attractions like a 60-metre-high Adventure Pyramid and a new skywalk connecting to a slide tower are driving recent visitor growth, backed by an estimated €2.5m investment. The region continues to draw crowds through specialised shoulder-season programming, such as illuminated autumn events and winter festival seasons featuring laser shows and sculptures.
