Thai Airways secures government approval for eight B787 leases

The Thailand Board of Investment has approved aircraft lease projects for Thai Airways International that cover eight Boeing 787 Dreamliners. 

The deals involve five used B787-8s and three new B787-9s with a combined value of $429.2m. Thai has been in negotiation with Avolon for the lease of ten aircraft in recent months. 

The B787-8s operate on six-year leases with deliveries scheduled during 2026.

The B787-9s use 12-year terms and enter service between the third quarter and early fourth quarter of 2026. Thai Airways plans to add 28 aircraft in 2026 that include ten B787-8s, four B787-9s and fourteen A321-200NX jets. 

The carrier currently operates a fleet of 91 aircraft. It is due to retire two B787-8s, two A350-900s and two B777-200ERs in the same period. The approval forms part of fleet modernisation efforts.

Cherdchome Therdsteerasukdi shared “The B787-8s will be taken on operating leases of around six years and delivered during 2026.”
