Dublin’s four local authorities have unveiled a new public sculpture on Grafton Street, bringing the identity and character of the Dublin region to life. Titled The Dublin D, the contemporary sculpture is inspired by Dublin’s distinctive brand mark and creates a new visual landmark in the heart of the capital. It celebrates the people, places and qualities that make Dublin a dynamic, creative and welcoming region in which to live, work, invest, study and visit.

The sculpture tells Dublin’s story through a series of carefully crafted design elements. Each letter captures a different aspect of the county and its people, from the warmth of light and welcome, to the greenery of its landscapes, the craftsmanship of wood, the movement of water, the rhythm of music and the diversity of its communities. Together, the elements create a contemporary interpretation of Dublin as a place that is creative, open, connected and shaped by both its people and its environment.

The unveiling marks a new chapter for the Dublin brand, which is delivered through the award-winning Dublin.ie platform, social media and targeted international campaigns. The Dublin brand is a collaborative initiative of Dublin City Council, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, Fingal County Council and South Dublin County Council, working together to promote the Dublin region internationally. Standing 2.7 metres high, 2.3 metres wide and 1 metre deep, the sculpture was designed and fabricated by Archetype.

Richard Shakespeare shared “This sculpture is a vibrant expression of what makes Dublin such a distinctive place. It captures the creativity, diversity, energy and sense of community that define our region, while giving people a new and very visible way to connect with the Dublin brand. Dublin has a strong international reputation, and this sculpture gives us an opportunity to celebrate that identity right here in the heart of the city.”
