A United Airlines flight from Washington to Amsterdam diverted to Shannon Airport early on 14 October after the crew declared a medical emergency over the North Atlantic. The Boeing 767-300 landed at 5.28am and was met by airport fire and rescue crews along with ambulance paramedics. The aircraft resumed its journey to Amsterdam around 6.50am.

The aircraft was performing a transatlantic flight from Washington, D.C. to Amsterdam when the crew declared the emergency while flying roughly an hour west of Ireland. Reports indicate the aircraft was originally considered for a diversion to Dublin before routing to Shannon Airport. The aircraft landed safely at Shannon at 5.28am.

Medical emergencies have accounted for more than a quarter of the estimated 60 diversions or unscheduled arrivals at Shannon so far this year. The aircraft was cleared to depart and resumed its flight to the Netherlands at approximately 6.50am. Shannon Airport is a primary transatlantic diversion point due to its location.
