Vietjet has signed a strategic partnership agreement with Starlink, SpaceX’s satellite internet service, in New York on 23 September. The Vietnamese carrier joins the few low-cost carriers who have committed to the satellite internet technology. Passengers will receive free wifi onboard. The first phase covers 120 aircraft: 100 Airbus A321 and Boeing 737 narrowbodies, plus 20 Airbus A330 widebodies. Vietjet plans to fit the system to all future deliveries too.
As of September 2026, Vietjet has a fleet of 121 aircraft, including those operated by Vietjet Thailand and Vietjet Qazaqstan. The company has over 400 new aircraft ordered from Airbus and Boeing for delivery through 2030. The service will be free on both domestic and international flights, including Malaysia-Vietnam services. Starlink’s low-earth-orbit satellites offer low latency and coverage over oceans, polar regions and remote areas, allowing passengers to work, stream and send messages from gate to gate.
While full-service airlines like Qatar Airways, Korean Air and United continue to expand their Starlink offerings, low-cost carriers have been slower to commit to the technology, let alone provide it free of charge to passengers. In Asia-Pacific, Cebu Pacific stated it will begin fitting Starlink in 2027, while in Europe Wizz Air has signed up for Starlink on its new aircraft from 2027. Neither airline has revealed whether or not they will charge passengers to connect to the internet via Starlink.
