Ireland’s three signatories

Three of the signatories of the Declaration of Independence were born in Ireland James Smith, George Taylor, and Matthew Thornton.

  • James Smith (1719 – 1806) born in County Down, Smith emigrated with his family to Pennsylvania around 1729. He received a classical education, studied law, and was admitted to the bar in 1745. A fierce advocate for boycotting British goods, Smith organized one of the first volunteer militia companies in Pennsylvania. He was elected to the Continental Congress in 1776, signed the Declaration, and was known among his peers for his legal expertise and sharp wit.
  • George Taylor (c. 1716 – 1781) born in Dublin or Antrim, Taylor emigrated to Pennsylvania in 1736 as an indentured servant, starting his career shoveling coal at an iron forge. He eventually worked his way up to become an ironmaster and businessman. Appointed to the Continental Congress in 1776, he signed the Declaration and supplied the Continental Army with cannons and ammunition. Unfortunately, his wealth was depleted by his financial sacrifices for the Revolutionary War.
  • Matthew Thornton (c. 1714 – 1803) was born in county Derry and emigrated with his family as a toddler, settling in New England. He became a prominent physician in New Hampshire, and served as a surgeon in the militia. A radical patriot, he was elected president of the New Hampshire Provincial Congress. He arrived at the Continental Congress in November 1776 but was still granted the honour of signing the Declaration. He later served as a judge and state legislator.
