Roscommon comes from the Irish “Ros Comáin,” meaning “Comán’s ridge” or “wooded height,” derived from “ros” (wood or promontory) and “Comáin” (a saint or local leader, possibly meaning “little hollow”). The etymology is rooted in Old Irish, tied to geography and personal names. The first recorded use of “Ros Comáin” appears in the Annals of Connacht around the 8th century, with “Roscommon” used in English records by the 13th century under the colonial admionistation..
