Glasgow Central Station fire causes widespread travel disruption

Travel disruptions persist following a major fire near Glasgow Central station, affecting rail services and commuters. The incident has led to cancellations and delays, impacting connectivity for travellers in the region, including links to Ireland.

Glasgow Central Station remains closed as of Tuesday, 10 March 2026, following a major fire in a neighbouring building on Union Street. While the station itself avoided significant direct damage, the structural stability of the adjacent gutted Victorian building—including a collapsed dome—has forced a total suspension of high-level rail services.

  • ScotRail: No services are operating in or out of the station’s high-level platforms. Low-level trains are running but will not stop at Glasgow Central. Passengers should use Anderston or Argyle Street stations instead.
  • Avanti West Coast: Operating an amended service to Preston, Carlisle, and Motherwell, where passengers can connect to Edinburgh or local Glasgow services.
  • TransPennine Express: Services between Glasgow Central and Liverpool Lime Street/Manchester Airport are cancelled.
  • LNER: Tickets for affected Glasgow services are being accepted on LNER routes between Edinburgh and London King’s Cross.

Multiple bus routes are diverted due to the closure of Union Street and surrounding areas. ScotRail ticket holders can use the Glasgow Subway. Several city centre streets remain sealed off, including parts of Renfield Street, St Vincent Street, and West Nile Street.

The fire broke out around 3:45 pm on Sunday, 8 March, at a vape shop on the ground floor of a B-listed Victorian building known as “Union Corner”.

At its peak, over 250 firefighters were involved in the response. No casualties have been reported, but the historic building suffered a partial collapse.

Network Rail expects the station to remain closed through Tuesday for safety inspections and structural assessments of the remaining facade. Travelers are advised to check live updates via the ScotRail JourneyCheck or the National Rail
