At least eight airlines were affected after Saudi authorities temporarily closed Abha airport on 13 July following a Houthi missile and drone attack. The attack was in retaliation for airstrikes on Sana Airport, which the Houthis blamed on Saudi Arabia. A NOTAM extended the closure to 16 July.
Airlines cancelling flights included Saudia, flynas, flyadeal, flydubai, Air Arabia, Air Arabia Egypt, Nile Air, and Qatar Airways. KLM suspended flights to Dammam, Riyadh, and Dubai up to and including 15 July. Lufthansa Group flights to Dammam, Riyadh, and Teheran remain suspended until 24 October 2026, while British Airways has cancelled or temporarily suspended services to Riyadh.
The European Union Aviation Safety Agency reinstated its warning to airlines on 14 July, advising them to avoid the airspace of Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, the UAE, and the waters of the Gulf of Oman within the Muscat FIR. Yemen’s internationally recognised government later stated it carried out the Sana Airport strike to prevent an Iranian Mahan Air A340 carrying a Houthi delegation from landing
