Norwich Airport was completely closed to air traffic on Friday 28 August 2026 due to a planned 24-hour strike by air traffic control workers. This major closure follows a sudden five-hour shutdown on Friday 21 August 2026, which axed multiple flights. The airport shut down from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM on Friday 21 August 2026.
Recent cancellations include KLM flights to Amsterdam and Loganair flights to Aberdeen. Future flights to holiday destinations like Spain are also under threat. The airport will fully close for 24 hours on Friday 28 August 2026 and no flights will operate that day.
The Prospect union is leading the industrial action. Air traffic control staff are currently working strictly to their contracted hours, refusing overtime, and turning down shift swaps. They are demanding a 10% pay rise to match English market rates, better pensions, and improved maternity and paternity leave. Passengers have been advised to check flight status with their airline before travelling to the terminal.
