TUI River Cruises has announced a fleet-wide winter investment program to upgrade and replace its onboard air conditioning systems following a wave of severe customer complaints. Dozens of holidaymakers have reported holiday hell conditions, experiencing temperatures up to 40°C onboard, broken toilets, and sewage smells on ships like the TUI Skyla and TUI Isla. The company is launching significant upgrades and system replacements across its European river fleet during the upcoming winter season.

Severe heatwaves across Europe have pushed cooling systems beyond their limits, leaving windowless cabins completely uncooled. Large portable blowers and fans placed in corridors have been reported as highly ineffective at cooling down common areas and dining spaces. Beyond the heat, travellers on the Danube River have faced low water levels, broken plumbing, out-of-use toilets, and water dripping through ceilings. Many passengers who spent up to £4,000 per holiday have expressed outrage at being offered initial refunds as low as £140 to £300.

A company spokesperson has blamed a mix of unexpected technical issues and extreme weather for the system stress but has apologised where standards fell short. Consumer advocates note that passengers who accepted initial cash settlements from TUI may have accidentally reduced the final amount they can now legally claim through travel insurance curtailment policies.
