Marriott International has signed a hotel management agreement for the world’s first urban-concept Ritz-Carlton Reserve property in Shanghai’s North Bund, scheduled to open in 2030 as part of a 480-metre mixed-use tower currently under construction. The agreement, signed on 20 August 2026, marks a major shift for the brand from remote, secluded hideaways to a bustling megacity location. The 110-room hotel will transform the brand’s traditional focus on isolation into an urban sanctuary, offering intense privacy, a slower pace, and highly personalised service in the middle of Shanghai.

The hotel will occupy the top floors of a supertall tower standing 480 metres tall with 103 levels, making it the tallest skyscraper in Puxi, the historic side of Shanghai. The building, designed by architectural firm Kohn Pedersen Fox, is built to be the world’s tallest all-electric tower with zero fossil fuels burned on-site, with the crown uniquely shaped to resemble a magnolia flower, the official floral emblem of Shanghai. Many rooms will look out over the historic Bund and the Huangpu River, with the property including multiple dining venues, a bespoke bar, a lobby lounge, an indoor pool, a fitness centre, and a dedicated spa and wellness retreat.

With this opening, Shanghai is expected to become the only city in the world to host all eight of Marriott International’s luxury hotel brands under one market. The property forms part of the North Bund Center development at 785 Dongchangzhi Road in the Hongkou District. Marriott International continues to expand its luxury portfolio across Asia, with the Ritz-Carlton Reserve brand previously known for properties in secluded locations including Thailand, Puerto Rico, and the Maldives.

Anthony Capuano, Chief Executive of Marriott International, shared: “The Ritz-Carlton Reserve Shanghai represents an exciting evolution for the brand, bringing our most exclusive collection to the heart of one of the world’s most dynamic cities, and we are proud to be part of this landmark development.”
