South Africa has welcomed exactly 7,581,455 international tourists between January and August 2026. The figure has represented an 11.7pc increase compared to the same eight-month period in 2025. The country recorded 1,005,286 international arrivals in August 2026 alone hitting a 7.4pc year-on-year growth rate.

South Africa has emerged as the strongest-performing African destination for international arrivals in the first half of 2026 according to UN Tourism data. The country has ranked among the top 20 best-performing destinations globally. The United States, United Kingdom and Germany have remained the largest overseas source markets. Regional arrivals from the rest of the African continent grew by 14.3pc year-on-year.

Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille has noted that with the success of the Tourism Growth Partnership Plan the government’s primary focus has shifted toward economic value. The current strategy has centred on converting arrival numbers into sustainable local jobs, infrastructure investments and longer visitor stays across more diverse communities.

Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille shared “The priority is converting higher visitor numbers into investment, jobs and local economic opportunities.”
