Spanish technology firm Indra has won cybersecurity and systems contracts from airport operator Aena valued at more than €120 million. The deals include an €80 million tender for the computer system that manages airport operations. The awards place Indra ahead of rival Telefónica in these key infrastructure projects for Spain’s main airports.

Indra, in partnership with Synaptic Aviation Inc., is deploying an advanced AI digital system across three of Spain’s busiest hubs: Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas, Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat and Palma de Mallorca. The AI-driven platform uses computer vision and analytics to track and optimise aircraft turnaround times. It ensures real-time operational visibility and highly precise coordination across roughly 477 aircraft parking positions handling over 150 million passengers annually. Through its civil engineering subsidiary Prointec, working in a consortium with Aertec and Airia, Indra secured a €25 million contract to drive major infrastructure upgrades for Aena’s Eastern region airports. Prointec is leading the project and site management for over 100 airport infrastructure projects. This management framework oversees a broader modernisation package valued at nearly €600 million aimed at digitising security, check-in, 5G capabilities and boarding processes.

Indra, alongside Aena and Spain’s air navigation service provider ENAIRE, successfully validated the European U-space integration framework. Tested in a digital setting at Málaga Airport, this technology establishes how uncrewed drone traffic and conventional manned air traffic control can safely co-exist in shared European airspace. Indra is currently one of four major tech firms competing with Amadeus, Sita and T-Systems for Aena’s €80 million centralized software contract. This tender seeks a single centralized platform to serve as the unified operating brain for all Aena airports.
