British Airways has launched a new service between London Gatwick and Colombo on 23 October. The new seasonal route operates three times a week throughout the 2026/27 winter season, giving British holidaymakers a new direct option for reaching Sri Lanka during one of its key travel periods. More than 170,000 visitors from England have travelled to the island so far in 2026, making England Sri Lanka’s second-largest source market with a 10pc share of all international arrivals.

Sri Lanka continues to capture the imagination of British travellers seeking more than a traditional long haul beach escape. The culturally rich island offers experiences from climbing the Sigiriya Rock Fortress and spotting elephants and leopards on safari to surfing the Indian Ocean and travelling through the tea country of the central highlands. Its heritage comes alive through ancient temples, UNESCO-listed sites and historic cities, while its culinary scene offers aromatic curries, fresh seafood and contemporary dining in Colombo. Ayurveda and wellness are deeply rooted in the island’s traditions.

The British Airways service operates three times a week with World Traveller, World Traveller Plus and Club World cabins. Return fares start from £620, including taxes and carrier fees, subject to availability. The launch comes ahead of World Travel Market London, taking place from 3 to 5 November 2026, where Sri Lanka Tourism will meet trade and media to showcase the destination. Sri Lanka Tourism hosts a press conference on Wednesday 4 November from 1.30pm to 3.30pm in Albert Rooms 1 and 2, ICC Maritime Suite, ExCeL London.
