The Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority has confirmed it will withdraw temporary measures it introduced to preserve connectivity after the European Commission banned all airlines certified in Tanzania from European Union airspace in June 2025. The decision will come into force on 1 November 2026. The regulator cited evolving operational circumstances and a reduced need for the temporary arrangements as reasons for its decision.

On 18 June 2025 the regulator had extended traffic rights to Ethiopian Airlines and Qatar Airways to support connections to major Tanzanian destinations. It granted Tanzanian operators regulatory clearance to partner with internationally registered operators through codeshares and wet-leased foreign-registered aircraft on block permit arrangements.

According to the latest available European Commission air safety list all 34 operators certified by the Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority remain banned from operating within the EU. When announcing the ban the Commission noted it had identified safety shortcomings in Tanzania in both operational and regulatory areas including a shortage of qualified personnel and non-compliance with international safety standards.

Jabiri K Bakari shared “The decision will come into force on November 1, 2026, citing evolving operational circumstances and a reduced need for the temporary arrangements.”
