Egypt is building a major rail corridor connecting the Red Sea with the Mediterranean as part of a 2,000-kilometre electrified network. The first 660-kilometre line will run from Ain Sokhna on the Red Sea to Alexandria and Marsa Matrouh on the Mediterranean via the Cairo region. Passenger services are due to start in July 2027.

The project aims to strengthen Egypt’s role as a logistics hub and offer an alternative for some freight affected by Red Sea insecurity. It will use 15 high-speed trains capable of 250 km/h, 34 regional trains and 14 freight locomotives. Siemens Mobility is leading the wider €8.1bn scheme.

The network forms a trade and transport corridor linking the Red Sea to the Mediterranean Sea. High-speed passenger trains will reach up to 230 km/h while freight trains will operate at around 120 km/h. The first phase creates a direct link between Egypt’s major coastlines passing through the country’s economic heartland including the New Administrative Capital and 6th of October City.
