A survey has found that 91pc of travellers consider a data connection vital for feeling secure abroad. According to Airalo’s 2026 Global Travel Safety Report 91pc of Italian travellers view a mobile data connection as essential to staying safe while travelling abroad. This is the highest percentage recorded among all nine international markets surveyed in the study.
While travellers place the highest value on staying connected for their security they are the least likely to engage with specialised technological tools designed for travel protection. Only 46pc of Italians are aware that dedicated travel safety applications exist. Just 26pc have ever downloaded or used a specialised safety app.
Instead of safety apps 58pc rely closely on basic navigation maps and general travel apps to find their way around while 42pc use translation apps to bridge local communication gaps. Common tools include travel apps, translation services and location sharing. The research highlights growing reliance on digital connectivity when visiting unfamiliar destinations.
