The Sheraton Athlone Hotel is operating at minimum bedroom capacity following a water leak that forced the evacuation of guests. Works are under way to restore full operations and the hotel is not currently accepting new bookings while the damage is assessed. The adjacent shopping centre has largely reopened.
A pipe joint failed in the hotel’s tower section leading to an internal water leak and activating the building’s sprinkler system. Guests were evacuated on the night of the incident with some relocated to the sister Hodson Bay Hotel and other local accommodations. Water spread into the adjacent Athlone Towncentre shopping centre which forced a temporary closure before reopening the following morning.
A small number of individual shops inside the centre remained temporarily closed for repairs. The hotel remains closed to new reservations and is operating at a restricted scale while engineering and safety assessments continue. No official timeline for a full return to normal operations has been confirmed.
