Amtrak has announced plans to roll out its new Airo trainsets on eastern routes beginning in late 2027, starting with the Northeast Corridor and regional lines like the Northeast Regional, Carolinian and Vermonter. The Airo trains debuted on the Amtrak Cascades route in the Pacific Northwest in September 2026 with the first units heading to the East Coast for testing.
Out of 83 total trainsets ordered from Siemens, most are assigned to eastern services including the Northeast Regional, Empire Service, Carolinian, Palmetto, Maple Leaf, Vermonter, Ethan Allen Express, Adirondack and Keystone Service. Key onboard features include ergonomic seats with forward-sliding cushions and extra legroom, large panoramic windows, individual power outlets, USB-C ports, complimentary Wi-Fi, touchless restroom controls, digital passenger information displays and speeds up to 125 mph on designated corridors.
Amtrak has drafted a reorganisation to split operations into a parent holding company with three specialised subsidiaries for Passenger Services, Infrastructure Management and Fleet Management. The change is designed to modernise operations, handle a large influx of new rolling stock and address maintenance facility updates across hubs like Boston, Philadelphia and Seattle.
