Madrid City Council has approved an increase of nearly €900,000 for the 2026 festive season, bringing the total Christmas illumination budget to a record €7m. The display features more than 13m energy-efficient LED bulbs across over 240 locations in all 21 districts. The lights switch on in late November and run through 6 January.
The expanded investment introduces new architectural light displays and walkable structures. Madrid collaborates with the Spanish Fashion Designers Association to feature unique holiday motifs on Calle de la Montera, Plaza de San Juan de la Cruz and Plaza de Chueca. A massive walkable light sail is positioned at Nuevos Ministerios along the Paseo de la Castellana.
The layout features three giant luminous angels in Plaza del Emperador Carlos V, a large nativity scene in front of the Congress of Deputies and a giant Baby Jesus display on the Ventas Bridge. Calle Alcalá mimics a star-covered sky and Calle Serrano showcases illuminated fabrics honouring the fashion district.
