The strike at Air Tahiti has entered its seventh day with passengers facing delays and last-minute cancellations on inter-island services. The airline reported it had operated about 70pc of planned rotations from Tahiti and transported 95pc of passengers with the help of alternative carriers. The industrial action involves three primary unions representing ground staff and cabin crew with demands focused on wages, working conditions, aircraft turnaround times and bonuses.

A simultaneous walkout by employees at SOMSTAT the aircraft refuelling company at Tahiti-Faa’a International Airport compounded the disruption. The strike solely impacts domestic inter-island flights operated by Air Tahiti. International flights operated by Air Tahiti Nui are a separate company and are not affected. Flight schedules are being organised on a day-by-day basis with cancellations possible as little as one hour before scheduled departures.

Air Tahiti is waiving change and refund fees for passengers holding tickets during the strike period. If a flight is cancelled due to striking Air Tahiti staff and the passenger is a non-resident on that island Air Tahiti will cover predetermined accommodation costs. Passengers can contact the airline directly or reach out to their booking travel agency. Negotiations with unions continued amid school holidays and peak travel demand.
