Joby Aviation wil fly its all-electric eVTOL aircraft across Tampa Bay in a reenactment of the world’s first scheduled commercial airline flight. The flight retraces the precise 23-mile path between St Petersburg and Tampa, Florida. The event honours the route flown by pilot Tony Jannus in 1914. Public viewing and pilot presentations began at 8.45am with the aircraft launch scheduled for 10am.
The original flight required lifting off the water. Joby’s modern eVTOL operates via electric propulsion and vertical lift capabilities meaning no runway is required. The event was held in coordination with local authorities and featured participation from other aviation firms including Beta Technologies. The flight highlights Florida’s push toward establishing future electric flight corridors. The public celebration takes place at Albert Whitted Park in St Petersburg. Live in-flight video was streamed between 10am and 10.15am. The flight represents a milestone for advanced air mobility and acts as a historic modern reenactment
