An Bord Pleanála is considering an appeal by Keywell DAC against Dublin City Council’s refusal to retain The Giddy Dolphin as a licensed premises in Temple Bar which could lead to the closure of the bar.
Keywell, the new owner of the Clarence Hotel and Dollard House, aims to protect existing jobs by retaining The Giddy Dolphin.
The appeal has heard arguments that there is no clear definition of a ‘superpub’ in the Dublin City Development Plan and that refusal would result in the premises remaining vacant.
The sole objector to the application is Temple Bar resident Declan O’Brien, who said: “the application will further erode the diversity of retail in the area”. He said: “There is already an over-saturation of licensed premises in Temple Bar. Granting this expansion will further tip the balance away from the eclectic mix of business outlets that defines the area.”
