Claiming the initial €5 entry fee has done little to serve as a meaningful deterrent, Venice’s budget and taxation officials have announced plans to raise the daily access fee up to €30.
The city also plans to expand the fee’s enforcement to cover a much broader portion of the year.
Venice is expanding its Marco Polo Airport to handle 20m passengers a year up from its previous 11.6m capacity creating a paradox with the city’s efforts to limit overtourism. While city officials are actively deploying measures like day-tripper access fees and group size limits to manage the daily influx of visitors infrastructure developers are moving forward with major expansions to meet growing international travel demand.
Construction is well underway at Venice Marco Polo Airport on a multi-phase development plan. The ultimate goal is a 116,300-square-metre extension featuring 45 new boarding gates and a modernised terminal designed to nearly double historical capacity.
Just miles away outside the Santa Lucia train station city officers are equipped with QR scanners to enforce a day-tripper access fee designed to deter excess tourism. Venice has also capped tour groups at 25 people and banned large cruise ships from docking in the historic lagoon.
