The inaugural National Trail Conference in Carrick-on-Shannon, Co Leitrim, brought together over 2,000 farmers, landowners, outdoor enthusiasts, and community groups, organised by Leitrim Development Company in partnership with the Irish Local Development Network and Rural Recreational Officers.
Discussions at the conference highlighted the significant economic impact of outdoor activities on tourism in Ireland, with Mark Rowlette of Fáilte Ireland stating that tourism benefits by €1.4bn from walking activities.
The event emphasised the importance of collaborative efforts between landowners and stakeholders in trail development, acknowledging the role of permissive access initiatives in benefiting rural communities.
The National Walks Scheme, supported by the Department of Rural and Community Development, plays a crucial role in developing recreational tourism and supporting farmers in creating walking routes, with 81 current trails and plans to increase to 142 trails, inviting new trail expressions of interest before October 11.
