Travel homeworkers group Travel Counsellors Ireland reports that South Africa has seen a 28pc increase in bookings, becoming the top long-haul destination for Irish holidaymakers seeking winter sun in 2025/26.
Dublin to Cape Town direct winter fights are under negotiation with a major Irish airline.
A similar experience has been seen by Mexico’s Riviera Maya, known for all-inclusive resorts and dependable weather, driven by a direct Dublin service to be introduced by Aer Lingus. The UAE is growing in popularity as a winter sun escape, alongside Thailand, Australia, and New Zealand, with bookings up by 12pc, 16pc, and 48pc respectively.
Cathy Burke of Travel Counsellors Ireland noted a shift in traveller behaviour towards adventure and memorable experiences beyond short-haul options. Summer travel to the USA, particularly to places like California and New York, is on the rise, with a 19pc increase in bookings year-on-year.
Cathy Burke of Travel Counsellors Ireland shared “We’re seeing a real shift in how Irish travellers approach their winter breaks. A long-haul winter trip is no longer seen as extravagant.”
