The Dublin Horse Show, a cherished fixture in Ireland’s cultural and sporting calendar, will take place from 6 to 10 August 2025 at the Royal Dublin Society (RDS) grounds in Ballsbridge, Dublin.

This annual event, celebrating its 150th anniversary, showcases Ireland’s deep connection to equestrian traditions, bringing together competitors, breeders, and visitors from across Ireland and beyond. Held over five days, the show offers a diverse programme of equestrian competitions, entertainment, and social events, set against the backdrop of Dublin’s vibrant cityscape.

The 2025 programme features over 160 classes and competitions, with a prize fund of approximately €1.5m, making it one of the most significant equestrian events globally. Key highlights include the Nations Cup for the Aga Khan Trophy on 8 August, where Ireland’s international showjumping team will compete against seven nations for a €250,000 prize, and the Rolex Grand Prix of Ireland on 10 August, offering €500,000 to the top 40 riders.

The Puissance competition, sponsored by Defender, will see riders attempt to clear the iconic red wall, while classes for Irish breeds like Connemara ponies and Irish Draughts highlight the country’s breeding heritage. Beyond sport, the show includes pony club games, side saddle exhibitions, and performances by Ben Atkinson’s Action Horses. Visitors can also enjoy a vibrant marketplace with equestrian products, artisanal crafts, and food stalls, alongside family-friendly activities such as face painting, a petting zoo, and circus-style acts on the Church Grounds. The Best Dressed competition on Ladies’ Day adds a touch of elegance, encouraging attendees to showcase their style.

Visitors to the RDS grounds can expect a lively yet accessible atmosphere, with over 100,000 attendees anticipated across the week. The event caters to a broad audience, from equestrian enthusiasts to families seeking a day out. General admission tickets are available at the entrance, though booking in advance is recommended for main arena events due to high demand. The RDS provides ample parking, and Dublin’s coastal villages and cultural attractions, such as museums and heritage trails, are within easy reach, offering opportunities to explore the city. The show’s blend of sport, tradition, and socialising creates a unique experience, though attendees should check the organiser’s website for weather updates or schedule changes.

The Dublin Horse Show was first held in 1864, established by the Royal Dublin Society, founded in 1731 to promote agriculture, arts, industry, and science in Ireland. The RDS, led by figures like Edmund Mahony in its early years, initiated the show to showcase Irish livestock, with horses quickly becoming the focal point due to Ireland’s equestrian heritage.

By 1868, it had evolved into a dedicated horse show, growing into a major international event. The Aga Khan Trophy, first presented in 1926, marked a milestone in its global recognition. Today, the show remains a cornerstone of the RDS’s mission to support Irish sport horse breeding and ethical horsemanship, contributing €45 million annually to Dublin’s economy through tourism and local business. The current show director, Fiona Sheridan, oversees a team dedicated to maintaining the event’s high standards, with 2025’s record entries reflecting its enduring appeal.

The show’s history is preserved in the RDS Archive, one of Europe’s largest equestrian collections, documenting catalogues, photographs, and trophies since 1868. Its 150-year legacy reflects Ireland’s prowess in breeding world-class horses, such as the Irish Sport Horse, celebrated in international showjumping and eventing. The 2025 edition, supported by sponsors like Rolex and Defender, will honour this milestone with special activities, reinforcing its role as a cultural and economic driver.

Visitors are encouraged to plan their trip early, with details available at www.dublinhorseshow.com, to fully experience this landmark event in the heart of Dublin.
