Ethiopian Airlines reported record revenues of USD7.6bn for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2025, reflecting an 8pc increase and transporting 19m passengers.

The airline has suspended flights to Asmara due to the inability to recover frozen funds in Eritrea, with CEO Mesfin Tasew attributing the issue to political decisions.

Tasew specified that despite the suspension of flights, the airline continues to use Eritrean airspace for international routes. Ethiopian Airlines recently secured a USD 500m loan from the African Development Bank to finance the construction of Bishoftu International Airport to handle 60m annual passengers.

The airline is pursuing a 2040 growth strategy focusing on network expansion, infrastructure development, and investment in staff.

Mesfin Tasew shared, “We pursued legal measures to recover the money through the courts, but the efforts were unsuccessful. Therefore the issue is a political decision.”
