AE Expeditions has completed its first biofuel trial on the Sylvia Earle, using 100pc Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) in Valencia, Spain.
The trial achieved a 90pc reduction in fuel-related greenhouse gas emissions, with no impact on engine performance. The Sylvia Earle operated for several days along the Spanish coastline, using HVO made from used cooking oil.
The company plans further biofuel trials in Europe in 2026, despite limited global supply of alternative fuels. The trial is born of AE Expeditions’ commitment to reducing emissions in climate-sensitive regions.
Sasha Buch shared: “Operating in some of the world’s most climate-sensitive regions, we recognise that reducing emissions is one of our most urgent responsibilities. This first biofuel trial has provided valuable insights that will guide future testing and support the broader adoption of sustainable fuels in the maritime sector.”
