‘Just three feet of clearance’ – newbuild Disney Destiny completes 40k conveyance down the River Ems

The Disney Destiny, a €1.2 billion Wish-class cruise ship, has completed its 40-kilometre conveyance down the River Ems, arriving in Eemshaven, Netherlands.

During the journey through a series of locks and channels, Disney Destiny traveled backwards with the support of two tugs and overseen by the Emden Pilot Brotherhood.

The width of Disney Destiny is 135 feet (41 meters) leaving just trhee feet of clearance at the narrowest points. 

The 144,000-gross-tonne vessel, built by Meyer Werft, will undergo sea trials in the North Sea before its two week transatlantic crossing to Port Everglades, Florida.

Its maiden voyage, a four-night Bahamian cruise starting 20 November 2025, costs from €1,800 per person and includes stops at Castaway Cay and Lookout Cay.

Themed around Disney heroes and villains, the ship features a Wakanda-inspired Grand Hall and a Destiny Tower Suite with Iron Man motifs.

Bookings for 2026 sailings show over 70pc occupancy, with five-night Western Caribbean cruises in December priced from €2,200, including meals and character experiences.

A Meyer Werft spokesperson shared: “It’s a testament to German engineering and Disney’s vision for family magic at sea.”

Sharon Siskies of Disney hared: “This ship isn’t just a cruise; it’s a floating epic where good battles evil in the most enchanting way.”
