The major redevelopment plans for Tenerife South Airport have hit a significant roadblock as the €464m main terminal remodelling contract expired on 15 September 2026 without receiving a single bid from any construction companies. Airport operator Aena launched the tender on 30 July 2026 as the centrepiece of a broader €550m modernising package.
The multi-year infrastructure overhaul was designed to unify the disjointed terminal buildings, set up an underground intermodal concourse for a future southern train station, expand parking lots and add six new non-Schengen boarding gates next to the control tower. Work was originally slated to begin in autumn 2027 and run through 2036 across 57 highly structured sub-phases so the airport could remain operational.
The complete lack of corporate bidders forces a direct delay on the largest transformation project in the airport’s history. Aena will now have to re-evaluate the technical specifications, financial margins or timeline constraints of the original tender documents. Typically in public procurement stalemates like this the operator must either restructure the project into smaller less complex lots or increase the public budget allocation to offset rising material and labour costs before publishing a revised tender.
