Aeroflot has finalised a firm order for 90 additional Yakovlev MC-21-310 aircraft. This agreement signed in Moscow in the presence of Russian President Vladimir Putin represents one of the largest single contracts in the history of Russian civil aviation. The new deal builds directly upon an existing 2023 order for 18 jets expanding Aeroflot’s total firm commitment for the narrowbody programme to 108 MC-21 aircraft.
The contract secures a multi-year industrial pipeline with deliveries of the 90 incremental jets scheduled across a four-year period. Deliveries include 14 aircraft in 2029, 18 in 2030, 24 in 2031 and 34 in 2032. The initial batch of 18 aircraft from the 2023 order is expected to arrive earlier between 2027 and 2028. Beyond the airframes themselves the comprehensive package covers full-flight simulators, crew training and 22 years of post-sale maintenance and technical support handled via Rostec subsidiaries.
The order specifies the MC-21-310 variant which is the fully import-substituted domestic version of the airliner. The planes will be powered by Russian-made Aviadvigatel PD-14 engines bypassing the Western Pratt and Whitney powerplants originally intended for the programme before international sanctions were enacted. The deal is a cornerstone of Aeroflot’s broader strategy to decouple from Western manufacturers with the airline aiming for a 50/50 split between domestic and foreign-built aircraft within the next decade.
