Air France has adjusted the trajectories of 130 transatlantic flights between February and April 2026 to avoid areas favourable to persistent condensation trails. The trial conducted with partners Estuaire and Klima under the European CICONIA programme covered nearly 4,300 commercial flights. The airline estimates the changes avoided a climate impact equivalent to 22,000 tonnes of CO2 and reduced the condensation trail effect on the affected routes by 57pc.
The trial revealed that aviation’s non-CO2 climate impacts are highly concentrated with just 3pc of flights accounting for 25pc of the total contrail-related warming impact. Out of 245 flights flagged for high persistent contrail risks 130 flights were actively rerouted around atmospheric hotspots. The flights that modified their trajectories experienced a 57pc reduction in contrail climate impact and a 36pc reduction in overall climate impact. Total contrail impact across the entire scope of the trial dropped by 8pc.
While the Air France Corporate Press Release highlighted the viability of these targeted strategies airline officials noted that large-scale deployment will heavily depend on future cooperation with air traffic control systems to safely approve path adjustments within congested oceanic corridors.
