He stressed that the vast majority of supply remains unique listings and described Airbnb as a community rather than a conventional online travel agency.

Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky confirmed at the Skift Global Forum that he was wrong to completely rule out traditional hotels and is open to listing major brands like Marriott and Hilton in the future. Chesky stated he moved away from a strict anti-hotel mindset. Travellers booking last-minute or business trips frequently look for hotels. Refusing hotel inventory previously pushed potential customers to competitors like Booking.com and Expedia. Airbnb already features over 4,000 independent and boutique hotel properties in select launch markets. The company is easing restrictions on selling non-home offerings, such as car rentals.

Airbnb is expanding into the traditional hotel market, focusing on independent and boutique properties. For years, the platform positioned itself strictly as an alternative to conventional lodging. Facing slowing growth and stricter short-term rental regulations in major global cities, Airbnb shifted its strategy to bring independent hotels into its primary ecosystem. In heavily restricted markets like New York, Paris and London, private home listings plummeted due to tight local rules. Onboarding licensed, traditional hotels allows Airbnb to maintain its room supply without breaking local housing laws. Airbnb is targeting corporate travellers who demand the predictability, seamless check-ins and central locations that hotels guarantee. The company noted that roughly 35pc of users who initially book a hotel room on the platform return later to book a traditional home rental. Airbnb charges hotels a standard 15pc commission, undercutting major online travel agencies like Expedia and Booking.com, which can charge anywhere from 15pc to 30pc.
