Airbus has started construction on a 6,221 square metre extension to its wing manufacturing facility in Belfast, a project designed to support higher A220 production rates. The multi-million-pound investment includes a third autoclave and specialised tooling to nearly double the production tempo to 13 aircraft per month by 2028. Belfast remains the exclusive producer of A220 wings, which are shipped to final assembly lines in Canada and the United States.

The factory extension, scheduled for completion in the first half of 2028, will house advanced composite wing manufacturing technology, including a resin transfer infusion process that creates wings 10pc lighter than traditional aluminium designs. The broader investment includes a new office block, security gates, upgraded electrical substations, improved IT systems, and a 650-space car park. Plant head Anthony Rouse has confirmed 40 new apprentices will join the Belfast site as part of the expansion.

Airbus completely took over the composite wing facility after finalising deals that shifted operations away from its previous owner, Spirit AeroSystems. The expansion secures high-technology manufacturing jobs in Belfast and supports the company’s global demand for its smallest commercial jet. The upgraded facility will provide the capacity to meet the growing order book for the A220 programme.
